An above ground pool is a freestanding swimming pool that sits on top of the ground, or is positioned inches below the surface of the ground. An above ground pool is a permanent structure that is designed to be left up year-round.
An above ground swimming pool has a corrugated wall system that is usually made of steel. The wall is pre-punched with your opening for your skimmer and return and is bolted in one section and fit into a track on the top and base. Premium above ground pools are made with resin or structure instead of steel. Above ground pools that are made with resin Ledges can be paired with a salt water system, but steel structured above ground pools cannot.
Most above ground swimming pools are round because they require equalized water pressure at all points. However, there are oval shaped above ground swimming pools which require buttressing on the straight sections of the oval to reinforce the pool’s structural integrity (so that the water pressure does not force the pool to collapse). Round above ground swimming pools can sit on a concrete pad (if perfectly leveled within 1/8th of an inch), but oval above ground swimming pools cannot because the buttress system must be buried below the grade. All types of above ground pools must be installed on ground that is properly graded and level. Round Pools will last longer than oval pools.
Inground Pools vs Above Ground Pools
What's the difference between an inground and above ground pool? With an inground pool you can have: a deep end, diving boards, water slides, water features, and walk-in steps, for enhanced accessibility. Both an Inground and Above Ground pool will require permits. An inground pool will increase your property taxes . An Onground or Semi-Inground or Above Ground pool will not increase your property taxes. Both an Above Ground and Semi-Inground pool can move with you to your new house. A new liner will be required every time you move the pool.
You might be surprised to learn that many home owners install their above ground pools themselves. Tired of dealing with take-down, portable or inflatable pools which can damage your backyard's landscaping and grading? True permanent above ground pools are designed to be left up year round. With one of 7-11 Pools inclusive pool packages and a little labour you can get an above ground pool that looks professionally installed for less.
Can you tell the difference between a DIY above ground pool installation and a professionally installed pool? Probably not - here are some tips to help you with your above ground pool setup:
What is an Above Ground Pool
An above ground pool is a freestanding swimming pool that sits on top of the ground, or is positioned inches below the surface of the ground. An above ground pool is a permanent structure that is designed to be left up year-round.
An above ground swimming pool has a thin corrugated wall system that is usually made of steel. The wall is bolted in one section and fit into a track on the top and base. Premium above ground pools are made of resin or aluminum instead of steel. Above ground pools that are made with resin or aluminum can be paired with a salt water system, but steel structured above ground pools cannot.
How do I determine what size to get?
You want to first make sure you have sufficient room for the pool in your backyard - make sure you understand any city easements that may be in place. You also want to check if you have any utility lines running through your backyard.
Once you determine an area that is clear, you can figure out the largest size pool you can fit. Generally, above ground pools come in 12', 15', 18', 21', 24', 27', 30', & 33' as well as a variety of oval pools.
Are oval or round pools better?
Stick with a round pool if possible. They are superior when it comes to strength of the wall, as the water pressure is equal on all points of the pool. Due to unequal water pressure, oval pools will require more structure to make them strong enough for our winters. This is why ovals are more expensive than round pools.
How do I decide where to put it in my backyard?
If you have a larger area and can be selective on location, definitely consider the proximity to your electrical breaker box. You can not run your pump and filter on an extension cord, so you need a permanent electrical service run out to your pool. It is also nice to place the pool away from trees, just to aid in keeping the pool clean.
What is the installation process like?
The installation of an above ground pool can generally be completed by an experienced pool installation crew in about 4-6 hours. This is not to say it can not be completed by a regular homeowner but it might be a slower process.
What are the zoning regulations?
“Every town is different,” when it comes to zoning regulations. You’ll need to find out the necessary distance between your pool and the property line, as well as the distance between your pool and your house. To confirm your community’s regulations and to check to see if you’ll need a permit, a visit, or call to the zoning board and building department is a good first step.
How do I protect myself and my children?
It is a good idea to call your insurance provider to check your homeowners coverage. Child safety considerations are also important, the number one safety rule is to never leave a child unattended near a pool. You should also consider installing a safety ladder or childproof fence, especially if your pool also has a deck. In some towns, this is a mandatory requirement
Can I install an above ground myself?
A lot of these are sold as kits and are marketed as DIY-freindly, and they are, but I put the level of difficulty as moderate to high. In other words, if you are an experienced DIY-er, you can probably erect your pool in a weekend (or even a single afternoon). For everyone else, it is recommended to hire an installation professional.
Why buy a partially Resin pool?
Resin above ground pools, also known as hybrids, are made of resin and other materials, such as steel or aluminum. Since resin is plastic, a pool cannot be made 100% out of this material but it is often a big component.
It offers a big advantage over an all-steel or aluminum above ground pool because it is resistant to rust and corrosion. This makes it a better choice for saltwater pools. Resin frame above ground pools are slightly more expensive than steel pools but pay off in the end.
What do I need to close my Above Ground pool?
If you live in a cold-weather area or don’t have a heater you will want to close your pool for the winter. This requires either a standard winter pool cover or a safety cover. Some people like to add a leaf net to make leaf removal in the Fall and Spring easier.
What do I need to maintain a clean pool?
You need to regularly maintain your pool whether you hire a pool professional or not you still want to have the basics. A pool brush and leaf skimmer net to maintain clean surfaces. A vacuum to remove debris and keep your filter cleaner. There are manual and automatic cleaners.
